Imagine walking into the school canteen after classes, where usual lunch tables are pushed aside, replaced by colorful stations buzzing with excitement. The air fills with chatter and laughter, the smiling faces shining under glowing lanterns, and the sweet scent of mooncakes mixed with DIY drinks. That’s exactly what happened on September 27, when our dorm staff turned the canteen into a lively hub for the annual Mid-Autumn Festival event. Students and teachers rolled up their sleeves for fun, celebrating this ancient holiday that brings people together under the full moon.
The fun began with drink-making stations, where the groups were stirring up bottled traditional tea with vitamin-C-rich orange juice. It left the room with a fresh, sweet aroma that made your mouth water. “It was like mixing a potion for good luck,” laughed G11 Benny Xu, still with drops of joy left on his mouth. These symbolic drinks for health and prosperity came right back to the roots of the harvest festival.
Then, magic time: mooncake-making-tables dusted with rice flour and everyone was an expert kneading dough. With the guidance of dorm staff, participants pressed molds into the shapes of flowers and rabbits, each filled with lotus paste, red bean, or creamy custard. The music played on, and “Mooncakes are round like the full moon, reminding us of unity,” shared dorm staff advisor Ms. Coco, as she helped a group perfect their designs. You almost heard the satisfying “thump” of molds stamping dough and saw the proud grins as fresh-made treats emerged sleek and shiny.
Creativity exploded at the lantern-crafting corner. Piles of wooden boards, glue sticks, and decorations turned into a kaleidoscopic pattern of colors—students cutting wooden boards into shapes of rabbits or sketching starry skies on glowing orbs with LED lights inside. The canteen echoed with “oohs” and “aahs” as lanterns flickered to life. After the event at night,, we paraded them around, the lights dancing like fireflies in the dimming light. “Mine had Chang’e on the moon—it felt epic,” said sophomore Asa Hua, holding his creation high.
To amp up the energy, the ping-pong toss into egg cartons game had lines snaking through the canteen. Slotted cartons formed tricky targets, and the “pong” of balls bouncing echoed amid cheers and groans. Nail a shot, and you would get prize tickets for special gifts. “We added this twist to blend old traditions with playground fun,” explained a staff member from the dorm team. The thrill of a perfect toss, followed by high-fives, made the room feel electric.
