In September, boarding students gathered in the MPR for an impressive life skill lesson hosted by our BIGZ infirmary: the first Health Salon. The event provided practical instruction in three important areas: cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and techniques for controlling bleeding with bandages.
The seminar turned the MPR into a learning lab full of excitement as students partnered up to learn new skills. According to the host, the goal was to give students the knowledge and confidence to respond effectively during medical emergencies. The session emphasized developing practical skills that are essential in a community living environment, moving past just theoretical knowledge. Boarders actively participated, maintaining a relaxed atmosphere while still being serious about learning.
A large part of the event focused on cardiovascular emergencies. With detailed guidance, students practiced the correct technique for chest compressions on training mannequins, which are professional plastic body forms used for practice. This was accompanied by instruction on operating an AED, a portable device that gives electric shocks to help restart a heart. Participants learned how to use the device safely, which provides voice instructions to guide them through the process.
The final part, which was also the most fun, focused on bleeding control using bandages. While wrapping their friends in bandages like mummies, participants became deeply engaged in the teaching process and learned how to wrap a bandage correctly to stop bleeding.
Overall, the first Health Salon was a successful and meaningful event. It improved the student community’s readiness for emergencies. Participants left feeling more confident in their ability to provide initial aid. The dormitory administration sees this event as a positive step toward creating a safer and more responsive living environment for everyone.
